Sneha Menon, 27, is a confident and successful young professional. She loves wearing elegant diamond jewellery with her Friday evening party wear. Unlike her parents, she does not hesitate before splurging on a lovely diamond necklace at her favorite jewellery store in a nearby mall.
|
Harsh Gupte, 26, is software developer at one of the leading IT firms in Pune. He loves surprising his girl friend in Bangalore. He will browse through a few online jewellery stores and have either a pair of earrings or a necklace delivered to his girl friend’s doorstep.
The Indian Consumer behavior is undergoing a paradigm shift. Led by the generation of Harsh and Sneha they are divorcing the traditional family jeweler and shopping from retail stores and online jewellery stores.

| Budding Designer |
|
| Shweta Shah, student of IIGJ talks about her jewellery designs |
|
Shweta Shah is a student of the first batch of Dimploma in Jewellery Design & Manufacture Technology (DJDMT) at the Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ), Mumbai. An artist at heart, she decided to have a blend of art and jewellery for her graduating project at the IIGJ. The growing importance of Indian Art in the international and the domestic market gave her the enthusiasm to take this project up and create a collection of jewellery.
She takes inspiration from works of the Mughal School of art. She was truly inspired by the vibrancy of colors, attention to details, use of Indian motifs and, the miniature art form. Her collection 'Miniature hand paintings' blends well with her artistically designed jewellery pieces. |

To address the downturn in the current market, the Council organized the 'Town Hall Meeting', similar to the one’s already held in Belgium and Israel earlier this year. It was held on July 28 at the Trident Hotel, Mumbai. I was happy to see a large number of industry members get an opportunity to share their feelings with Mr. Gareth Penny, managing director of De Beers Group of Companies and Ms. Varda Shine, managing director, The Diamond Trading Company.
The Council has officially announced its domestic diamond marketing initiative Indian Diamond Jewellery Program (IDJP) scheduled from September 19, 2009 to February 14, 2010. The Council will collaborate with manufacturers and retailers for generic promotions of diamonds in India. The first networking event for IDJP will be held on 7th August.
Now its time to tighten our seatbelts as months of preparation and hard work will be culminating into a week of two exciting gems and jewellery shows: the first edition of Indian Diamond & Color Stone Show (IDCS) is scheduled for the first week of August and India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), slated two days later. We have received confirmation from over thousand visitors from different regions of the world. Trade delegates from China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Iran will be present at the shows. IIJS and IDCS are both close to my heart as I am anticipating a lot of excitement to unfold during these shows.
