| First Indo-Euro Jewellery Summit in Mumbai |

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) had unveiled the official launch of its first Indo-Euro Jewellery Summit at Mumbai's Renaissance Hotel & Convention Centre on 18th November, 2009. This Summit, targeting the leading jewellery retailers in Europe having chain stores in the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy, was held from 18th November, 2009 to 22nd November, 2009. The Indo-Euro Jewellery Summit was focused for European Union (EU) markets to encourage sourcing of finished jewellery from India.
The Summit was inaugurated by guests of honour Ms. Anita Agnihotri, Development Commissioner of SEEPZ and Mr. Spencer Mahony, first Secretary and Head, UK Trade and Investment, Western India British Deputy High Commission along with Mr. Sanjay Kothari former chairman GJEPC, Mr. Filip Van Laeve, chief executive officer, Jewellers of Europe and Mr. Rajiv Jain, vice chairman, GJEPC.
This Indo-Euro project has been undertaken for at least the next two years based on the findings of the study conducted by GJEPC. The major objectives of this Summit is to allow major European chief executive officers (CEOs) and buyers (decision makers) from the five countries like the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy to actively discover the power of Indian jewellery manufacturing under the umbrella of the GJEPC.

According to the provisional figures received from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) for November 2009, the total export for this month stands at US $2142.23 million (Rs 9976.39 crores) as compared to US $1383.54 million (Rs6779.33 crores) last year. There has been a growth of almost 55 percent. |

| Anant Shooting Star Contest

The Anant campaign, launched in Mumbai in September by its brand ambassador Sonam Kapoor, has entered a very exciting phase. As part of its sponsorship of Anant, Rio Tinto had recently organized a contest called ‘Anant Shooting Star Contest’ wherein the best Anant in-store display and promotion was to be rewarded by Bollywood starlet Sonam Kapoor.
This contest had taken place in more than 13 regions between December 20 to 25, 2009, and the winners will be announced on 2nd January, 2010.

| GJEPC Signs MoU with the Israeli Diamond Industry |

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC) and the Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies (IDI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of areas of cooperation between the two parties. The MoU was signed at a ceremony in Mumbai by the GJEPC executive director Mr. Sabyasachi Ray and IDI managing director Mr. Eli Avidar.
The MoU states that the two parties share the desire to promote positive relations between the two industries, and to enhance areas of cooperation between them, as well as to intensify the dialogue concerning issues of mutual interest via collaboration between the parties. |

| Kimberley Process Plenary Session Communique

The Seventh Annual Plenary Session of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) was held from 2nd to 5th November, 2009 at Swakopmund, Namibia. It was attended by 37 participants and the World Diamond Council (WDC) and Civil Society attended the Plenary as observers. Some non-participating governments comprising Egypt, Swaziland, Kenya and Mozambique, desirous of joining KPCS as participants, were also present.
The Plenary noted that a sub-group of the Participation Committee (PC) has made enquiries about the difficulties facing potential applicants. The responses have been summarized in the form of a report in order to provide a basis for further action. The report requests the KP Chair to take the three steps suggested therein to encourage resolution of the problems identified in the report.
